Training Pastors from the Slum

Discussion by Efren Roxas,
Servants, Manila,
formerly of Lilok
How to train heads of families to become elders and pastors
Case study: Profile of an urban poor worker

We needed to develop training for a typical slum church leader who needs training

  • 35 years old
  • full time baker
  • receives a minimum wage
  • Has 5 kids
  • An elementary graduate
  • 10 years old Christian
  • 3 years a church worker
  • A slum dweller

This requires a different kind of training.  How do you train someone who is marginally literate?

  • only on Saturdays as they are working during the week
  • role plays, dramas
  • case studies
  • looking for paradigm shifts
    • e.g. from fragmented to integrated thinking
    • e.g understanding work as a gift from God
