Place: Peace Church

Attendance:

1.
Viju Abraham
2.George Samuel
3. Corrie de Boer
4. Pedro Hernandez
5. John  Huffman
6.Chonabelle Domingo

Highlights of the meeting includes the following:

1.  Introduction from the Team Leader:
    From His Experience:

“ Relationship/Domestic Issues is better than the training material itself”
“ My leadership perspective changes when I spent quality time with my students”
“ Being a course facilitator is better than just a mere lecturer”

II.
Bryan oriented the group on the Training Materials
III. Key Insights/Issues from the group:

a. Discussion on the training hours  required for  the certificate level. It is offered 12 to 15 months, 5 hours a week for academics, 15 hours for ministry time ( 10 hours of supervised ministry, 5 hours with facilitator)
b.
Bryan presented  the CL326 Team Building course as an example of the objectives of a course the learning outcomes and the measurement of those learning outcomes

GENERAL COMMENTS:

c.
The oral presentation, as part of the assessment activity is a good way to further strengthen the concepts taught to the students
d. No one will fail the course.  Instead, students who didn’t have yet the needed required competency will be asked to complete it

IV. Questions Raised:

Q1.  Viju – “Is it possible to translate the materials in any language”.  Yes

Q2.  Pedro – “The materials should be contextualized.”  He shared the physical condition of their country that would make it hard to apply in their context.  “Is seems that the assessment materials is in English context?”

Q3.  Viju – “Is it okey if we can just have the subject/general content and we will just contextualized it”.

Answer from Bryan – Yes for example, e.g. Team definition and illustration can be contextualized

Insights:

1.  Pedro – “It seems that Unified Course is impossible”.

E.g. Columbia context
- Education should be free
- Educational colonialism
- Definition of Poor is worst
- Even using computer is confusing

Note:  Viju suggested to consider George Patterson’s curriculum

2.      John – “Even the use of assessment is threatening to our country, there is danger in being unprepared for leadership?

3.      Pedro – “Competencies are really so high but that is really what we need.”

4.      Viju – “”How do you train Pastor to your country Ptr. Pedro?”

Answer:  We bring them to the word, Spiritual authority is a “Priority”.

5.      John – “Sound teaching should be combined with spirit’s role.  Too much teaching sometimes led Pastor to leave the ministry and just stay as teacher/trainer.

6.      Bryan – “Comment on Journal Writing”

Corrie – “Yes even highschool can do it”.

7.      Viju – “Can we do the journal verbally?”

8.      John – “The issue of confidentiality students life is danger if a lot of information is disclosed.  There is freedom in having a hidden identity.

July 9, 2004 Minutes

Key Issues:

1.  Clarification of Objectives:
Prioritize the MA, and  Certificate Level

2.  Curriculum

ü      Develop new one
ü      Consider the Program of the Philippines, “LILOK” and other existing materials e.g. Certificate M.Div. Level

3.  Role of Facilitator
·        Come up with CD for training
·        A facilitator should be reflective and has the ability to critique

4.  Storytelling:  As pedagogical method or rather a andragogical method
-
all insights should be backed-up with theological biblical principle
-The method to be effective should be backout by actual exposure too

5.  Curriculum Materials
§         Global learning
§         SIL
§         Ask other schools to give a copy
§         Build a resource base from other church planting and NGO groups and training bodies

6.  Accreditation

Corrie – “the network can be the accrediting organization”

Viju – “we have an accredited arm in India, Asian Theological Association”

Corrie – “it can be linked up with other country, e.g. D.Min. Program in the Philippines

The Encarnação Network could act as an accrediting body for urban poor training

7.  Languages of delivery
A policy on language issues needs to be developed so the network knows what languages the courses will be delivered in. This policy needs to consider methods of translation and assessment

8.  Oversight by the leaders of the Network/Alliance
The leadership of the Alliance need to be informed as to the content of the courses and  discuss and resolve any controversial issues and decide what theology bias will be used in the courses

9.  Contextual Issues
Levels of adaptation of courses needs to be different for contexts and cultures within the network and also different learning styles

The learning approach will make substantial use of transformational conversations of the poor in developing an urban poor theology.

The Chairperson of the Commission will be Corrie De Boer, the Coordinator Bryan Johnson, and the advisors will be Pedro Hernandez, Ruth Callanta,  George Samuel, Viju Abraham, Pushpa Waghmare, Raineer Chu, and Jambir Teffera, and someone from Brazil and Africa.
